Associate Professor – History and Philosophy of Mathematics

About the role

The Department of Mathematical Sciences at the University of Copenhagen seeks an Associate Professor to teach and develop courses on the history and philosophy of mathematics. The position is part‑time, fixed‑term for 3½ years, starting 1 March 2027.

Key responsibilities

• Teach undergraduate and graduate courses on the history of mathematics and integrate historical perspectives into core curricula.
• Develop, coordinate and update curricula and teaching materials for history of mathematics courses.
• Conduct original research in the history of mathematics and publish internationally.
• Apply for external research funding and manage research projects, including supervision of research fellows.
• Participate in departmental duties such as examinations, assessment tasks and outreach activities.

Required profile

• Documented research qualifications in the history of mathematics with international scholarly contributions.
• University‑level teaching experience and documented teaching competencies, including pedagogical training equivalent to the university’s teacher‑training program.
• Extensive experience teaching the history of mathematics to students with a mathematical background.
• Ability to develop and coordinate courses for both undergraduate and graduate students.
• Demonstrated capacity to attract external funding and contribute to organisational and leadership activities.
