Principal AI Engineer

About the role

Maersk is building an AI‑powered operating model for Ocean Operations and next‑generation optimisation for global network design. The Principal AI Engineer will set technical direction for AI‑augmented optimisation and intelligent decision‑making, leading specialists across modelling, heuristics, analytics and experimentation.

Key responsibilities

• Lead the optimisation intelligence agenda across network design, routing, vessel deployment, cargo flow and operational decisioning.
• Define how AI systems interact with solver layers, heuristics and optimisation services, shaping patterns for recommendation, autonomous action or human escalation.
• Guide specialists building optimisation models and AI capabilities, ensuring a coherent AI + OR architecture.
• Drive structured experimentation, validate model behaviour and translate new methods into measurable business value.

Required profile

• Advanced degree in a quantitative field (engineering, mathematics, computer science, operations research).
• Significant experience leading applied AI, decision intelligence or optimisation projects in complex operational domains.

Required skills

• Strong Python programming skills.
• Deep understanding of optimisation and modelling principles, including heuristics, search and mathematical programming.
