PhD Stipends in Statistics and the Mathematics of Insurance and Economics

About the role

We are seeking PhD candidates to join the Department of Mathematical Sciences at the University of Copenhagen. The positions start around 1 September 2027 (negotiable) and focus on research at the intersection of statistics, insurance, economics and mathematics.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct original research in one of the advertised topics, such as optimal transport, Wasserstein metrics, or causal machine learning.
• Develop and analyse mathematical models related to insurance, economics or actuarial science.
• Publish findings in peer‑reviewed journals and present at international conferences.
• Collaborate with faculty members, the Copenhagen Causality Lab and other research groups.
• Participate in departmental seminars and, where appropriate, supervise undergraduate projects.

Required profile

• University degree equivalent to a Danish master’s (or bachelor’s for the integrated programme) in statistics, insurance, economics or a closely related quantitative field.
• Strong mathematical background and ability to work independently on theoretical problems.
• Motivation to propose a personal research angle that fits the department’s expertise.

Required skills

• Knowledge of probability theory and statistical methods.
• Familiarity with optimal transport, Wasserstein metrics or causal inference.
• Experience with machine‑learning concepts applied to reliability or economics.
