Job description

About the role

The Center for Volatile Interactions (VOLT) at the University of Copenhagen seeks a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher to advance understanding of volatile organic compound (VOC) exchange in terrestrial ecosystems. You will design and conduct hypothesis‑driven experiments, develop a research plan based on your expertise, and contribute to the centre’s interdisciplinary projects.

Key responsibilities

  • Design and execute laboratory and field experiments on VOC production, consumption, and transformation in soils, plant surfaces, or aquatic sediments.
  • Perform rate measurements, stable‑isotope labeling studies, and molecular analyses to identify responsible organisms.
  • Analyze VOC samples using mass‑spectrometric techniques such as PTR‑MS or GC‑MS.
  • Develop and apply statistical models and programming tools (R, Python) for data interpretation.
  • Publish findings in peer‑reviewed journals and present results at international conferences.

Required profile

  • PhD in biology, chemistry, biogeochemistry, microbiology, or a related field.
  • Strong publication record in biological VOC research or related disciplines.
  • Experience designing hypothesis‑driven experiments and conducting independent research.
  • Ability to secure competitive research funding is an advantage.

Required skills

  • Mass‑spectrometric VOC analysis (PTR‑MS, GC‑MS).
  • Stable‑isotope techniques for studying biological processes.
  • Advanced statistical analysis.
  • Programming in R or Python.

What we offer

  • Creative and stimulating working conditions in a dynamic, collaborative, international research environment.
  • Access to state‑of‑the‑art laboratory facilities and instrumentation for volatile analysis.
