PhD Fellowship in Neurovascular Signalling & Brain‑Machine Interfaces

About the role

The Department of Neuroscience at the University of Copenhagen offers a three‑year PhD fellowship starting 1 December 2026. The project focuses on brain neurovascular signalling and its interaction with novel brain‑machine interfaces, using in vivo two‑photon microscopy and in vitro patch‑clamp techniques.

Key responsibilities

• Perform in vitro patch‑clamp recordings on mouse brain slices.
• Conduct microsurgeries to implant chronic cranial windows and custom brain‑stimulation probes in transgenic mice.
• Train mice and acquire longitudinal two‑photon imaging data in awake, behaving animals.
• Analyse multimodal imaging and electrophysiology data.
• Develop and execute an independent research project under supervision.
• Complete PhD coursework equivalent to ~30 ECTS points.
• Participate in research stays at partner institutions and engage in teaching or dissemination activities.

Required profile

• Highly motivated and dynamic candidate with a strong interest in neurovascular biology and brain‑machine interfaces.
• Ability to work independently and as part of an international, collaborative team.
• Willingness to undertake extensive laboratory work and animal handling.

Required skills

• In vitro patch‑clamp electrophysiology.
• Microsurgical techniques for chronic cranial window implantation.
• Two‑photon microscopy in awake mice.
• Mouse brain slice preparation.
• Data analysis and quantitative imaging methods.
• Experience with viral tools and behavioural paradigms (preferred).
