Senior Software Engineer - mainframe development

About the role

As a Senior Software Engineer in Mastercard’s Mainframe Services team, you will help modernise and maintain the core transaction processing systems that handle billions of payments worldwide. The role focuses on ensuring the reliability, scalability and security of the mainframe environment while integrating it with modern distributed services.

Key responsibilities

• Design, develop and maintain COBOL, JCL and DB2 applications on z/OS.
• Collaborate with cross‑functional teams to integrate mainframe services with distributed systems.
• Lead modernisation initiatives such as migration to event‑driven architectures and API enablement.
• Ensure compliance with Mastercard’s Mainframe Security Technical Standard and participate in daily CRQ syncs and operational reviews.
• Mentor junior engineers and contribute to the SE Guild’s leveling and performance standards.

Required profile

• 5+ years of experience in mainframe development (COBOL, JCL, DB2).
• Strong understanding of z/OS architecture and batch processing.
• Experience with file‑transfer gateways, SFTP protocols and integration layers.
• Familiarity with Agile methodologies and CI/CD pipelines.
• Ability to work in a global team across time zones and a passion for modernisation.
• Bonus: knowledge of Mastercard’s Bill Pay products.
