PhD Fellowships in Medical Science & Technology Studies (AI in Healthcare)

About the role

The Centre for Medical Science and Technology Studies at the University of Copenhagen offers two fully funded three‑year PhD fellowships. The projects focus on the use of artificial intelligence and predictive analytics in dementia diagnostics and mental‑illness treatment, employing ethnographic methods to examine their social, ethical and organisational impacts.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct participant observation in hospital clinical settings.
• Perform qualitative interviews with healthcare professionals, patients and biomedical scientists.
• Analyse policy documents and clinical guidelines related to AI in healthcare.
• Develop theoretical insights on how predictive AI reshapes patient personhood, professional practice and service delivery.
• Produce academic publications and present findings at international conferences.

Required profile

• Strong interest in ethnographic research on digital and data‑intensive medical technologies.
• Motivation to investigate ethical, social and organisational dimensions of AI in health.
• Ability to work independently and as part of an interdisciplinary team.
